How Do You Write an Essay Proposal?

So you have been asked to write an essay proposal and you don’t know how to begin. The essay proposal is an outline of your research project, and is designed to ensure you are on the right track prior to beginning the writing process. There are several easy steps to follow to make writing the essay proposal much simpler.

  • Review the assignment guidelines. Most instructors have a definite idea of what they are looking for in an academic essay, and in most cases, they will provide a detailed description of the assignment (i.e. instructions, grading rubric, etc.). Carefully review the assignment guidelines to ensure you are researching an appropriate topic.
  • Form a thesis. Your thesis is the backbone of your essay, and it should cover the main points you will be discussing, without going into details. For example: “Leaders face many challenges, such as motivating staff, resolving conflicts, and balancing fiscal concerns.” This thesis tells the reader that the essay will address the challenges of a leadership role.
  • Review the research. Once you have created your thesis, you will review the research and select information that pertains to your thesis. As you locate pertinent information, notate the source so that you can reference it when you begin writing.
  • Draft topic sentences. Once you have reviewed the literature (research), you will draft your topic sentences and add notes from your research. For instance: “One of the challenges of leadership is motivating staff to perform to the company’s standard of service. A) Carnegie (1996) asserts that a strong leader is able to adapt his style to more effectively inspire his team.” The topic sentences and relevant notes will become the body of your essay, so it is important to have a clear direction that ties in with your thesis.
  • Summarize your research concept. You will want to summarize the topic and key points of your proposed essay. This will allow the reader to see the path you intend the essay to follow, as well as show how each point relates to the others to form a comprehensive picture.
  • Add a reference page. The reference page allows your instructor to see the type of sources you are using (i.e. primary, secondary, internet research, etc.). This is an important step, since it will ensure you are not using non-academic sources, and it carries over when you begin writing the actual essay. Take the time to format the reference page according to the assignment guidelines (i.e. APA, MLA, etc.). It will save you time when you begin writing the essay, and shows your instructor that you are on the right track.

Writing an essay proposal doesn’t have to be an intimidating prospect. If you follow these six easy steps, it will not only help you create a solid proposal, but will give you a general outline you can follow when you begin writing the essay.
