How to choose a topic for a history essay
History essay writing may not be as bad as you think, even if you are not a good writer. The idea of writing about a history topic may cause a few to panic, but when you have the advantage of choosing a topic you may be able to find something to write that can work for you instead of against you. Choosing a topic is more than just considering your interests. You have to think about guidelines and instructions for writing the paper and making sure your topic adheres to them.
Brainstorm Interesting Parts of History
Depending on what you have learned so far in history or during your line of coursework you can choose an area of interest to give you a starting point for brainstorming. Brainstorming is when you take a general or broad topic and break it down into smaller subtopics or categories until you find something of interest you want to work with. This can be an event that happened, a prediction that was made that came true, or a political figure that has made considerable contributions to society.
Make a List of Ideas and Writing Prompts
Create a list of prompts based on ideas you come up with. Some may consider this as brainstorming while others feel this is not the same thing. A list of prompts may not be related to the same subject but they could still lean toward a solid topic once you take more time to work with it. A prompt for history could be a significant date, the name of an important person, the name of a war, and so forth. They may or may not be complete sentences but they do not have to have direct connection with one another.
Narrow Down Your List and Make Final Selection
Once you have had time to think about your ideas and what you want to do, start doing process of elimination to determine what you should write about. You can do this well in advance of doing additional research and this may help you develop your main idea, argument or purpose behind your essay assignment. Be creative with your selection and try to view things from a different perspective when making a final decision. Consider sources you will need to use during research when determining your topic.
