Taking Detailed Notes When Writing Your Essay
The writing process should be one of the most important academic techniques a student learns. Once a person becomes a competent writer then they have the ability to express ideas and share experiences that allow them to connect with people all over the world. One of the most overlooked aspects of the writing process is taking notes. This is a vital part of the writing process because it provides an author’s foundation of knowledge. They can use them to organize, sculpt and reform their essays to express information in the manner desired.
Organization is the Key
An author is going to take notes on virtually all things that surround the topic of the essay. However if these notes are not kept in a detailed fashion, finding relevant information will be nearly impossible. Organizing notes is not complicated or difficult, there simply has to be a hierarchy that you follow. The heading should be your main idea or subject. Placed underneath that should come the detailed facts, which support the main topic. It is here that quotations and detailed facts can be placed and their sources mentioned. That way when you are writing your essay you can refer back to your notes to find the key facts to support your point or to enhance the understanding of the topic to the reader.
Make Notes Work for You
Every person is going to think a little differently than someone else. This means that detailed notes to one person may not seem so detailed to someone else. Understand what works for you individually when detailed notes are needed to write an essay. Create headings and bullet point ideas underneath them that allow for you to easily access them later. Some people may need to use a large number of sections in their notes, while someone else may only need one or two. Each writer has to learn what works best for them in the essay writing process. There is really no wrong way, just ineffective ways. Practice the one that works best and stick to it.
Keep Projects Separate
Each writer is going to have a different method of doing this but each separate essay project needs to be kept in a separate location. If you don’t have this practice then it won’t matter what detail is used in note taking, because a student will have a problem finding them. Some writers use a specific notebook for each project where others simply designate sections. Whatever a student chooses to do, keep your notes in unique sections and the writing process will be much smoother.
