The Scottish curriculum, also known as the curriculum for excellence, is an educational standard set for Scottish school children and teens. This is newly developed standard that has a purpose to help develop educational needs of youth. It gives insight on which areas of education to focus on that is essential for success as an adult. A special group of individuals and organizations provide the foundation for this documentation. It is overseen by the Education Scotland (government). The government in this case makes sure schools and councils throughout Scotland uphold regulations outlined.


Controversies surrounding the Scottish curriculum continue. Is the information too vague? Some wonder if the information outlined in the curriculum is too vague to implement throughout the school system. This is unclear as there are various standards and expectations students need to meet that vary. Some lawmakers wondered if the context of the curriculum were clear enough for teachers and students. Teachers are expected to assess students in a number of areas to track their progress. But, because such standards are criticized by government officials and parents, it may not be clear of assessment of students will be done fairly.


Some believe elements of the curriculum should be delayed or changed depending on student grade level. Each student has different educational needs and schools are expected to meet them. But, because there is a level of misunderstanding as to how students are expected to meet academic goals, few feel it is not fair to continue education standards with new regulations. Such regulations may not be helpful in getting students where they should be. This could lead to issues with teachers in deciding how to make their curriculum suitable to the needs of their students. Because some feel the changes are necessary it will take time to really understand how the changes affect student education development.


In certain parts of Scotland schools have the option to adopt certain regulations based on academic development. Few schools decided not to adopt new changes done to regulations because they feel students are making good progress without it. Others feel the changes put a damper on school abilities to teach what their children should know for their grade level. Overall, many schools throughout Scotland are making progress whether they decide to adopt new regulations are not. For some, the change was necessary to get the progress they are observing.
