Why you should not over quote in your paper
Over quoting on a research paper may not be a good idea for several reasons. The biggest reason is it may look as if you were lazy and decided to copy content word-for-word. It is one thing to use a quote to help readers understand the point of view of the author that said it, but when you overdo it makes the content you wrote overall look questionable. You should be able to paraphrase and summarize when necessary and limit the use of quoting in your paper.
It May Come Off as Plagiarism
Too much quoting in your paper may look as if you just copied the content. Many instructors will take off points for this because they expect more of your work to be original and different. Sometimes when you over quote it just repeats something already highlighted within the text. Other times it can get complicated reading a paper written by a student when they mention so much content written by another author.
You May End Up Miss Quoting or Failing to Give Proper Credit
Sometime adding too much may lead to making mistakes that could have been avoided. Some students may use multiple quotes and forget to credit one, especially if they are from different authors. You may misquote someone if you are not careful in how you use it within your context. Other times it can make your content difficult to follow because there is lack of original thought from the student.
You May Miss the Point of the Assignment and Lack Original Content
As mentioned earlier, most writing assignments are based on providing original content. Too many quotes can take away opportunity for you to show your viewpoints, opinions, or other significant details that would make the paper an original piece. When you include so much content that was spoken by another person it may leave the impression you did not understand what you should have written about.
It is good to mention a quote when it is necessary but paraphrasing or summarizing can be a better option. Mentioning a quote here and there helps bring a unique view point from something you have researched. Your paper is the prime opportunity to show what you took from it and what you want others to know what you have learned.
